okay, I think I've got it down.
Here are a few ideas on how the Elf Kings are chosen, listed from most likely to least:
1. Test/Trial--The Amulet choses the king, regardless of background. This would explain the similarities to the Earlking's mask and the current King's amulet. We can infer that both the mask and the stone are traditional Elf artifacts, which the ruler is required to wear.
2. "Democracy"--Where the Elf people choose the king themslves based off a candiadate's accomploshments, skill set, and overall character. I put this in quotations because a democracy implies a government position or term that is limited, instead of chosing a life-long monarch. Perhaps this process is only conisdered if the last ruler had no clear hier.
3. Monarchy--The traditional form of rule where a parent leaves the throne to the offspring. This may not be a set process, as in Prince of the Elves the king: "made Max the prince" as he was "everything Trellis was not." Of course, this was probably just the Voice putting Max in a better position to exact his revenge since Trellis turned defective against the "king" since the first book.
This is not a set list, so let me hear your thoughts!
