Navin Hayes (ナヴィン・ヘイズ Navin Hayes) is the deuteragonist of the graphic-novel series by Kazu Kibuishi, Amulet. He is the biological son of David and Karen, younger brother of Emily Hayes, and boyfriend of Alyson Hunter
By an ancient prophecy, he was appointed the position Commander of The Resistance. Although he is often late for class aboard the Firebrand, his bob-battle experience[1] makes him more qualified than other students to pilot the Colossus. Navin is often ridiculed and underestimated, but his fiercely determined nature tends to guide him and his allies out of dire situations. On his own accord and on behalf of his piloting abilities, he has saved himself and those around him plently of times.
History[]
The Stonekeeper[]
Navin was not in the car crash that took the life of his father, although, the rest of his family was going to retrieve him from an unspecified place when the car went off the road and down a cliff.
Personality[]
Navin is kind-hearted and considerate towards others around him. He often observes the moods and feelings of others, taking into account how they feel and what he can do about it. For instance, in book one, he can be seen trying to cheer Emily up. He is often headstrong and impatient, but he can appear level-headed and responsible, as well as resourceful and wise information some situations. For the most part, he is whipsmart when it comes to technology, and is growing effectively confident in his own abilities.
The sudden death of his father has greatly changed him, and he recognizes how much his father's death has changed Emily as well. Navin's easygoing, optimistic, personality is in stark contrast to Emily's serious and determined one, most likely a product of trauma from the death of their father. Navin is often a voice of reason, though anyone seldom really listens to him at first. When he becomes Commander, however, he’s taken much seriously.
Navin has great leadership abilities, and this is evident throughout the series. When he needs to, he can become a serious and determined fighter and an excellent strategist, especially when it comes to saving other people and his sister. Navin cares about his family and wants to be with them. Navin can appear distrusting to those he does not know, but his is loyal and faithful regardless.
Skills & Abilities[]
Navin has a knack for piloting machinery, including airships and robots. Just shortly after coming to Alledia, his piloting skills are expressed through his enjoyment and eagerness to fly, first seen after he successfully flew through a tunnel full of rakers with no prior knowledge. From piloting the Charnon House - a skill he apparently acquired from a video game - to driving Luna Moth to safety during a funnel storm, his skill and knowledge can be easily seen throughout the books as he pilots a plethora of different machinery.
Relationships[]
Family Relationships[]
Emily Hayes: While initially seeing Navin as quite a bit of an immature younger brother, as shown when she is reluctant to allow him to pilot the Luna Moth, she seems to develop a deeper respect for him after witnessing his technological and leadership skills. Due to the responsibilities imposed on them after entering Alledia, both siblings develop not only in their overall maturity but in their relationship and willingness to work together as well. During the various occasions Emily and Navin are separated while in Alledia, they worry about each other's safety often and even embrace whenever reunited.
Karen Hayes: Karen is Navin's mother. Karen can be seen fussing about Navin, making sure he is clean and healthy. Navin loves his mother but sometimes he can be annoyed about her worrying about him. Navin can be sometimes worried about his mother. Karen wants to go back to Earth, but Navin wants to stay with Emily. Not wanting to leave her children, Karen decides to stay with Navin and Emily.
David Hayes: We don't see Navin interact with David in the series, but we can hear David in Emily's dreams talking about him. It is implied that they were very close before his untimely death. In Book V, Navin asks Alyson if her dad had always put so much trust in her, to which Aly replies she guesses so, and Navin responds saying that it must be nice to have her dad so close by, implying that even after years, he misses his father.
