Obviously:
--SPOILERS--
And...I'd recommend to skim lol—this has a lot of rambling in it and a lot of speculation.
Here's a buffer image with my complete set! (so no one accidentally gets spoiled)
Overall Thoughts
I think it wraps up Emily's character arc very well, but I feel like it spends too much time with new characters than it does with older characters. I just feel like the two Mountain Giants and the new Guardian Council eat up too much page time. Imo, the final book in a series is for closure—not for introducing more stuff. No hate of course because Kazu Kibuishi has done a remarkable job on this series overall, so I don't want to take away from that.
Ikol
Ikol—the big baddie of the book—being made by Silas is definitely interesting. It also raises a ton, ton, TON of questions. Did the voice ever speak to him? Was he even aware that his creation went rogue? Plus, it's implied that the voice has been speaking to Stonekeeepers for a very long time. Does this imply Silas is even older than he seems? Or is it the void that enables residents there to be able to travel through time, like Emily and Vigo? Or maybe Ikol is just one voice and history has always repeated with another voice.
Ikol's Masters
This part confuses me. I thought it was implied that Ikol's masters were from those ships that the shadows came from. Maybe that was just a red herring from Ikol though. And are they made by Silas too? Another thing—do they actually exist on some plane of existence? Or do they not really exist anywhere because they seem to be more like phantoms when we see them on both Alledia and on Earth. This part confuses me the most, so I'll just let you talk about it in the comments:
Shadows
We're all still confused about Sybrian, right? Probably a continuity issue, but I'd like to try and make it make sense. In the first book, Trellis was possessed by Sybrian—supposedly to do the bidding of the Elf King. (As for how the Elf King was able to prevent getting possessed? Simple, he's dead and only "alive" because of Ikol.) But Ikol was wrong to think Sybrian could actually make Trellis do his bidding. It feeds off of things like anger and fear and, in turn, amplifies them as it seems. So Trellis wasn't 100% himself, but he wasn't under the total control of the Elf King.
Kanalis's Curse
It seems like Leon's curse was either caused by Ikol or the shadows. Not sure how that really makes sense. I would have preferred if the curse wasn't lifted tbh since most of the cursed have already made peace with it, so it felt a bit unnecessary. Although Enzo and Rico's human appearances are pretty much how I'd imagine them at least. On a lighter note, this panel is unintentionally funny due to General Pil not having changed at all:
Ronin
So, a bit of a continuity issue here. Vigo seems to imply Ronin is dead in Book 4, but she's just alive?? I mean, he does say people think she's a ghost, but how did he even find this info?
Gabilan
Well, you know what they say about a picture saying a thousand words:
Trellis
I think his story ended well. Not King of the Elves like everyone expected him to be. But just a natural leader of the Guardian Council. I'm also happy that Riva and he ended up together, although it might have been better to leave his future up to interpretation given all the shipping wars.
Navin
Navin got robbed of a conclusion imo. He should've had a little more focus—he's the deuteragonist for crying out loud. Where's his goodbye with Aly? I mean, it's probably off-screen since we know a bit of time has passed since they defeated the shadows, but I'm a little disappointed we didn't see it.
Return to Alledia?
Honestly, it's almost straight-up confirmed that at least Emily's adventures in Alledia aren't over with all the time manipulation going on. I do hope it means Navin will return once again too because he's been just as impacted by Alledia as Emily. I do, however, think the ending did a good job of closing up the story. A chance to live an ordinary life, but adventure is still lingering in the air—and Emily seems to know it will eventually call again. Maybe not for a long time, but it will happen.
Big Question
Is Silas from Earth or Alledia?
